Since 2007, members Shelly MacDermid, Dave Varga, Patrick Hughes & Will Armstrong have been the heart & soul of the Soul Medix quartet or SMQ. Shelly-Anne MacDermid Lead vocals, percussion, harmonies Shelly's vocal talents to say the least are incredible! She has a natural singing talent which critics have described as being a mixture of Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Shelly started her musical career early and she has studied, rehearsed & performed with some of Canada's greatest vocalists. Her surperb tone & large range lend her the abilities to sing any song with ease & comfort. Originally from Warwick Village, Ontario, Shelly has shown her talents at many functions, weddings, commercial ads, nightclubs & charity events throughout London and surrounding region. Her singing influences are evident with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Colin James, Martina McBride & Etta James. Everyone who has witnessed any of her performances truly understands her powerful voice which evidently derives from her soul. Patrick Hughes Guitar, lead vocals, harmonies, arrangements A professional musician and music educator, Patrick has been hailed as a virtuoso by the Edmonton Sun. He has played over 150 shows in 2007, countless shows during 2008, & many shows during 2009 including playing on the west coast cruise lines during the summer months. He has had radio play on blues stations across North America including a #1 hit on some local stations in B.C. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta & a graduate of 2 music diploma's from Grant MacEwan, Patrick has studied the BMU's programs at the University of Alberta and the University of Western Ont. You will thoroughly enjoy his broad playing styles from the likes of Albert, Freddie & B.B. King, John Scofield, Lenny Breau, Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix. His years of experience throughout the region has included recordings at Fanshawe College, EMAC, Owlsville studios & Groovey Tube studios. Dave has played at various weddings, nightclubs, festivals & special functions all throughout Ontario and Dave has been fortunate to have opened shows and performed with the likes of Prairie Oyster, The Byrds, The Good Brothers, Anne Lindsay, John P. Allen, Ronnie Prophet, The Bill Durst band, plus many other talented local musicians. His bass influences include Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Adam Clayton, Flea & Sheryl Crow. Always a thrill to watch live, Will is an outstanding drummer with many styling influences which include Steve Jordan, Steve Gadd, Danny Carey, Josh Freese & Matt Cameron. .
We hired Soul Medix for our wedding reception entertainment and were so glad we did! They really helped throw a great party! Many of our guests commented that Soul Medix was great, and Shelly was an amazing vocalist. They fully catered their music selection to our preferences (even making sure all of the songs we requested as "must haves" were played) and adapted perfectly to the crowd so that the dance floor was full all night long! We asked if they were able to play, "The Rose" by Bette Midler for our bride and groom dance and expected them to play it off a CD or mp3, but instead, they played the song as a quartet in a manner that would make Bette Midler wish that she stuck to acting and never pursued a music career.
